Searching |
Searching in MyPixelVault is very easy and powerful. You can either type the search statement yourself or use the search wizard. |
MyPixelVault searches using the KEYWORDS that you have added to each of your images. MyPixelVault can also search the COMMENTS that have been added to images. |
The power of MyPixelVaults searching is dependant on the number and consistency of your keyword entering. The more keywords you add to your images the better the searching will work. |
Search results are displayed in two very different ways. |
![]() |
Lists all matches to your search a long with the title of the image, the size of the image and a rating which measures how close this result is to the search pattern. |
![]() |
Lists all matches to you search as thumbnails. If you have deleted the thumbnail cache, or MyPixelVault was unable to create a thumbnail for any reason that the thumbnail will be replaces by a 'thumbnail not available' image. |
Double click on an image in the Thumbnail View to open it in full size, this is the same as pressing the ![]() |

Search View Toolbars |
The following toolbars appear on both the 'List View' and 'Thumbnail View' parts of the search tab. |
![]() |
![]() |
View the selected image in a seperate window. |
![]() |
Open the current image with the Windows default image manipulation program. |
![]() |
Copy all of the images that have been returned from the current search to another location. |
Creating your own searches |
Searches are never case sensitive. |
A simple 'or' search. Any number of search terms in a simple list one after another. |
Let's say that we want to search for all images that have the words 'london' or 'paul' in them. |
![]() |
A simple 'and' search. Any number of search terms in a simple list one after another. |
Let's say that we want to search for all images that have the words 'london' and 'paul' in them. |
![]() |
To narrow the search we can add as many terms in between a set of <"> as necessary; |
![]() |
We can join the above searches to return more relevant search results; |
Let's say we need to find all images that have 'paul' and 'london' associated with them, but also we want to find images that have 'julie' and 'paris' associated with them; |
![]() |
There will be instances when you need to search for images that have specific keywords associated with them but in order to reduce the number of search hits you will want to ignore images that contain other keywords. |
Let's say that we want to search for images that contain 'paul' and 'london' but not those that were taken on a boat. We can tell the search engine to ignore all images that have 'boat' as a keyword; |
![]() |
Searching based on the date the image was taken is handled as follows; |
The format of the search is always dd/mm/yyyy. |
To search for all images that were taken ON and after a certain date we can use the following, which will return all images taken on the 30th October 2005 and later. |
![]() |
To search for all images that were taken ON and before a certain date we can use the following, which will return all images taken on or before the 30th October 2005. |
![]() |
To search for all images that were taken only on a certain date we can use the following, which will return all images taken on the 30th October 2005. |
![]() |
We can further limit our search results by including (or indeed excluding) images of a certain size limit. |
Let's say we want to check for all images of me (!), but only those below 100k in size; |
![]() |
Instead lets find those images of me that are above 100k in size. |
![]() |
We can combine these two functions to find those images of me that are greater than 100k in size but smaller than 1 megabyte; |
![]() |
When using the "size>" or "size<" function you have four options for the units; |
![]() |
![]() |
![]() |
![]() |
Let's say that we want to filter our searches by the original filename for the image. You might want to do this for instance, if you want to differenciate by pictures taken with different cameras (my Fuji digital camera stores filenames beginning with dsc). |
The following searches for all images of me in london whose filename has the letters dsc (in that order) contained within them. |
![]() |
If you want to override the current setting for Thesaurus use then you can add either of these to your search request. |
|
Finally, we can combine any (or all) of the above search options to create a powerful search. |
This search string will retrieve all images that have 'paul' and 'julie' in them that are greater than 500k in size and less than 2 megabytes in size, but do not contain the keyword 'paris'; |
![]() |
Please email me if you would like other search options added in future versions. |
Using the Search Wizard
The wizard can be used to put together searches using one or more of the available search functions;
